The following is slightly modified from something I have written for diandian and Rainlane.

News Item: (From http://news.sina.com.cn/photo/s/12832.shtml)2
One is One Too Many
Dear Mr.Wu,
Had this young man been your son, would you have said the same?
The tragedy could have been avoided if teachers, peers, administrators such as Mr.Wu, and, most important of all, parents, are a lot more understanding. Instead of instilling in the minds of the students that such a failure is the end of the world, and a disgrace to themselves, their parents and their ancestors, parents should show their moral support to their children by letting them know they are still loved and appreciated, and that such a failure does not bring disgrace to the family nor put them in a hopeless situation. Life must go on. Things would come to past. There are other roads to take. This is not the end.
In a practice essay I found on the Internet, students were asked to descript the following picture (see insert at the bottom.) The picture depicts the student as a spring. An accompanying caption says,“Education is like a spring. When the pressure is too small/light, there is no reaction. When the pressure is too much/high, there will be a rebound.”
In my opinion, the cartoonist has misfired: the analogy is incorrect. The spring is the student, not education. The cartoonist should have written:“Students are like springs when it comes to education. When there is little pressure—too little education—the effect on the student is negligible. But when there is excessive pressure—too much education—the elastic limit of the spring will be exceeded, and it will break.”….(i)
How many springs must we break before we mend the error of our ways?
Your Sincerely,
UNO WHO
