William T. Sherman, the great american civil war general, not only have a tank named after him for his military achievement, but also have a word, "Shermaneque", coined after his clear and direct style for disavowing presidential aspiration. when asked whether he would run for president in 1884, he responded, "if drafted, i will not run; if nominated, i will not accept; if elected, i will not serve". (question asked, question answered, attack plan followed, problem solved)
similarly, Lyndon Baines Johnson dropped a bombshell in 1968, during a live TV speech. "i shall not seek, and i will not accept the nomination of my party for another term as your president". (straight-shoot texan? in reality, LBJ is probably the most effective deal broker in US legislative history)
however, my favorite comes from witty US Congressman Mo Udall of Arizona in 1983, "if nominated, i shall run to Mexico, if elected, i shall fight extradition". master of language with a tough of humor!
